Dear Sonia...We are so very sorry... We saw the segment on the news last night and were blown away. Yes, we heard of the accident last fall, but did not connect it to you. Sending our condolences to all of your family and an especially big virtual hug to you...you are an amazing woman and it sounds like you met your match in Iwan. I hope you find comfort in knowing that he lives on both genetically and in the hearts of your children. We are so very sorry for your loss.

I met Iwan in ‘95 as we went to the OAC together. We shared many laughs, friendly debates and he was a star on our intramural soccer teams! It didn’t take much to get a smile out of that fella! He made everyone who knew him and that was around him a better person. Enjoyed our visit at our reunion in 2019 and was proud to see what a beautiful family he had! Our hearts go out to all of Smolder Family. I worked with Iwan for the last 3 years with Sollio, spoke to him weekly, sometimes daily in harvest. He was always such a fun and positive person to work with. He always told me stories of his children and all the activities that they did. We had the pleasure of getting to know Iwan through our daughters becoming best friends at school. He was a fun and devoted dad, always setting up play dates and fun activities for the kids. He was so kind and easy to talk to and it was very apparent that his kids and family meant everything to him. I enjoyed working with Iwan over the last couple years, and he was a genuinely great guy. When my Dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer Iwan was such a supportive friend and always gave heartfelt advice. I will truly miss him and our chats.

Iwan was the best husband, father, friend. When you think of “worlds best husband friend and dad” his picture would be next to that phrase in the dictionary. He didn’t just drop his son off at scouts - he was a scout leader. He didn’t just drop his daughter off at skating - he was involved in her skating club. Everything he did he did with passion and commitment. He was reliable and you could always count on him for help- whatever you needed wherever you were. I am so grateful and honoured to have had him as my brother in law. His kids had the best dad experience anyone could have ever had. He was so heavily involved in the fabric of the community that his loss will be felt by everyone for many years to come.
