Obituary
Obituary of Diny Craenen
CRAENEN, Gerdina (Diny).
Embraced by the love of her family at home and abroad Diny Craenen peacefully passed on Saturday August 1st, 2020 in her 84th year. Beloved wife of Gil for over 63 years. Treasured Mom of John (Joanne), Perry (Connie) and Linda (Richard). Much loved Oma of Shiann (Mark), Pauline (Leo), Clark (Janine), Brock, Gillian and Nathan. Great grandma to Kyla, Mikey, Caitlin, Scarlet, Amber, Ruby and her little source of joy Ethan.
Born in 1936 to a family of 12 in Eindhoven, Netherlands, Diny will be greeted by her parents Maria and Piet as well as two sisters and brothers.
Diny and Gil immigrated to Canada in 1957 with $80 in their pocket and a dream of a new life in the country that liberated them at the end of World War 2. Diny referred to herself as “A proud Canadian by choice”. Moving to Strathroy in 1963, Diny truly loved her new hometown where she would spend the rest of her life.
An outgoing personality and a love for working with people, Diny took immense pride in owning and operating the Treasure House Gift Shop for over 20 years. Her mantra was to always go above and beyond for her loyal and beloved customers. Grateful for her life in Canada, once Diny retired she focused on giving back to the community. Delivering Meals on Wheels, volunteering at the VON, working at the hospital coffee shop, these are just a few of the organizations, amongst a very long list, that benefited from her compassion and care.
Sitting still was just not Diny. Long walks with Gil for a Tim’s, cultivating a stunning garden, cleaning, cleaning and more cleaning, Diny lived her life with vigor and purpose.
As much as Diny loved her business she also loved sports. Diny enthusiastically watched the Blue Jays, Maple Leafs, curling, golf, literally any sport. In addition to Gil and sports, her other passion was spending time with her grandkids. They are beyond grateful for the life lessons just being around her gave them.
A private family service will be held at DENNING’S OF STRATHROY. Cremation to follow. As expressions of sympathy, donations may be made to the Victorian Order of Nurses. Online condolences and donations may be left at www.strathroyfuneralhome.com .
