i would like to express my deepest condolences to your family at this difficult time. Having returned from vacation just yesterday I was shockd to read the obituary in KW record that Rick had passed away. I have many fond memories of my friendship with him and the Steffler family. Although I had not seen Rick for many years, I will always cherish that friendship and I am so grateful to have met someone with so much passion for literature. It came as no surprise to me that he was such a wonderful mentor and teacher to his students. May God be with you all during this difficult time and give you comfort.

I was born in Ontario, but lived in California until I was 14. When I first moved to Canada in 2003, Mr. Steffler's English class was where I met my first friends. The hexagonal desks of his classroom broke down barriers, encouraged camaraderie and conversation, and made me feel welcome, for the first time, in this country.
Mr. Steffler encouraged me that first year to submit a short story that I'd written for his class to a Canadian fiction magazine. I remember many one-on-one editing sessions with him, where we polished up the rough edges of the piece before I sent it in. The story was never published, but looking back, I don't think publication was ever actually the point. At a time when I was so vulnerable and lost, Mr. Steffler made me believe that I belonged in Canada. I remember him saying that it must have been "in my blood" because somehow, even though I'd never lived here, my writing style was "classically Canadian" and it deserved to be read.
He always knew just how to say the things that people really needed to hear.
Though I've still never had the privilege seeing my own writing "in print," I feel that I have already received the highest possible honour for a writer. After taking a couple of creative writing classes at university, I delivered a copy of my collected works to Mr. Steffler to read. About a year later, a younger sibling of a friend of mine informed me that Mr. Steffler had taught one of my poems in her Canadian Literature class. In my opinion, there is no higher accolade than that.
Mr. Steffler made an impact on so many lives, and I feel so lucky to have known him. I would not be the person I am today if I hadn't taken his classes. I hope he knew how much he was loved by so many. My sincerest condolences to the Steffler family. I am so sorry for this loss.

The Seattle Cleminsons have been and will continue to think of Rick and Kathleen and family for a long time! Living out West in Seattle for years unfortunately limited our interactions with Rick but I remember ever visit vividly.Rick was able to make people feel special. He made all our visits seem personal, never rushed and uniquely and completely genuine. On my last visit in July, I didn't quite realize the extent of Rick's sickness. True to form however and despite unimaginable pain, he got out of bed and made sure he spent time with me. I was overwhelmed. I hope the visit meant just a fraction to Rick of what it meant to me. While I was leaving, I felt compelled to comment on Kathleen. I told Rick how amazing she looks. Rick didn't miss a beat and replied, "I know, my wife's hot". Classic Rick! He had a somewhat silent but huge magnetism. At family gatherings, I also seemed to end up standing beside Rick and shooting the breeze. It went without saying...but I knew our relationship was special. God Bless Rick, I know he will, how could he not!

To the family and friends of Rick Steffler, thank you for sharing him with us.
Mr. Steffler, or just 'Steffler' as we were privy to call him was just one of those teachers. Being in that English class (2001) was like being in a movie, where the teacher just plays by his own rules. Every day was a surprise, you honestly could never anticipate what would be next. He was a larger than life character that, in his own way, cared so dearly about his students. Yet he treated us, not even as students, but as blank slates. He tore down all our previous beliefs, discarded what we thought we knew, and turned the world upside down to show us that there was beauty everywhere. My favourite memories were just being absolutely lambasted for over-interpreting poetry or prose. "Why does it have to MEAN something?!" Steffler would say, "just let it be, read it and let yourself feel whatever you feel, and...that's what it means."
I know it sounds cliche, but I'm sure you will hear it from countless students that Steffler taught: he changed my life. I can't imagine what it would be like to still see the world through the narrow, obstructed lenses I used prior to his class. I am so thankful for those few months of my life that I was able to soak up his passion, his idiosyncrasies and his ideas. Never settle, he would say, aim higher, always higher. Mediocrity has no place in this world, and he lived by that mantra.
As a teacher, I must say that many of Steffler's ideas and practices find their way into my own methods. He was so good at connecting with us, giving us a voice. If I could even be a fraction of the influence on my students that he was on us, I'll be doing a great job.
My sincere condolences for your loss. Rest assured that his life and legacy is not one that will soon be forgotten.

This just proves how fragile life is. A man bigger then life itself has continued his journey today. Thank you for your never ending support, enthusiasm and willingness to put your students infront of all else. The song "How am i supposed to live without you" comes to mind. You've touched so many lives and created better students out of each and every one of us. Even though you may have continued on to meet your favourite poets and authors your legacy here will live on. you will not and can not be forgotten. I just personally want to say thanks for believing in me and my writing when no one else would. As I sit in class I realize, without your help, I never would've made it here. No words can describe how grateful I am and I hope I've been able to make you proud. O captain my captain, you shall be missed.
If only I could hear your discussions with Hemingway right now.
Mr Steffler was an idol, mentor and best friend to all of the students of SDCI. Without him I would never be confident enough to share my writing or even begin to write. We will never forget all the indescribable experiences we had in his classes

I'm feeling pretty crushed by the news of Mr. Steffler's death. I'm in my thirties and yet, I still think of him as "Mr. Steffler." He was brilliant and amazing. He introduced us to Roland Barthes and reader response theory. This is advanced reading for high school (to say the least). He loved Virginia Woolf. He loved Hemingway, too, and Wallace Stevens. When he was in his 20s he saw the French Lieutenant's Woman and was stunned by it. He showed this movie to our class and told us to pay careful attention to Meryl Streep's eyes. It's weird that this is what I remember most vividly. In addition to being an extraordinary intellectual, he struck me as a deeply feeling person. This is what made him an excellent teacher. He was tough in the right ways and he was also extremely compassionate. He spoke of his wife and children quite lovingly.
This one time I submitted an assignment and he returned it with the comment "You're a writer, Lindsey." It meant a lot to me. I was thinking about him recently. I was thinking I'd drop by the high school at some point on my next visit home to tell him about my doctoral studies in English. I think he would have been really proud and excited.
This is from "Death of the Moth" by Virginia Woolf (one of his favourites):
"The same energy which inspired the rooks, the ploughmen, the horses, and even, it seemed, the lean bare-backed downs, sent the moth fluttering from side to side of his square of the window-pane. One could not help watching him. One was, indeed, conscious of a queer feeling of pity for him. The possibilities of pleasure seemed that morning so enormous and so various that to have only a moth's part in life, and a day moth's at that, appeared a hard fate, and his zest in enjoying his meagre opportunities to the full, pathetic. He flew vigorously to one corner of his compartment, and, after waiting there a second, flew across to the other. What remained for him but to fly to a third corner and then to a fourth? That was all he could do, in spite of the size of the downs, the width of the sky, the far-off smoke of houses, and the romantic voice, now and then, of a steamer out at sea. What he could do he did. Watching him, it seemed as if a fibre, very thin but pure, of the enormous energy of the world had been thrust into his frail and diminutive body. As often as he crossed the pane, I could fancy that a thread of vital light became visible. He was little or nothing but life."

I am deeply saddened to hear the news of Rick Steffler's death from cancer. I was a student in the first class he taught at SDCI in 1987 (OAC English) and it was a revelation! He was a truly inspiring teacher, and a lovely man. He opened up the world of literature, not just for us book lovers, but for those in the class who always hated English and struggled to get a good grade. This is the mark of a great teacher. Few are blessed with this gift.
The most important thing Rick Steffler taught us that year in preparation for university, and for life, was to think. Think! And to learn how to read and understand symbols (not just those found in books). One of my fondest memories of him is the day he turned up to class and wrote, "THERE IS NOTHING TO BE DONE" in capital letters on the blackboard, and then left the classroom. Stunned silence. What do we do now? Is this a challenge? Do we follow him? Is this an existential question? Is there nothing to be done, and by doing nothing, are we doing something? Following a heated debate, we made for the English staffroom where he was sitting with that wry smirk on his face, and said "I wondered how long before you all got here".
No doubt many of his students over the years will have wonderful memories of their own. I went on to St Jerome's College at U of Waterloo, inspired by him, and never stopped trying to understand the symbols, and wondering if there is nothing to be done. I regret that I cannot be there to offer my condolences, and to celebrate the beautiful life of Rick Steffler. I am thinking of you all, and will be there in spirit.

To this day I still remember him teaching James Joyce's Araby. It left an indelible mark on me and instilled a real joy of reading, that remains with me today. Thank you Mr. Steffler you will be greatly missed. My condolences to all of his family and friends.

Oh Captain, my Captain.
How I wish I had seized an opportunity to tell you just how much I enjoyed being taught by you (many years ago now), as you instilled in me a love for English Lit. How I remember entering into your class, knowing that you had been, for a short time, a favourite teacher of my late-brother, Jay. I remember your kind words about him and the compassion you showed me as I missed him.
I know your family is going to miss your wry smile and quick wit, as well as your infectious enthusiasm for life.
I am thankful for the short time that I knew you as my teacher, and I will pray for your family as they cherish the many, many memories that they have of you over the years. May God grant them comfort...

Peace and strength to you in this season of grief. I wanted to add my condolences as I have such fond memories of Mr. Steffler as my grade twelve English teacher back in 1987-88. He was the cool new teacher and so good at what he did. He wrote my first letter or recommendation--and I remember beaming all the way home after he had me read it. He made a big impact in my love of literature and my writing abilities. So, even as you grieve him, know his legacy is wide spread. God's comfort to you all--as you take joy in the memories and feel pain at his absence.
peace,

Words can't describe how sorry I am to hear of Rick's passing. He was an exceptional teacher. It is with great sorrow that I offer my condolences. Rick was my first department head and was present for that ever intimidating first job interview. To be honest, he scared the crap out of me at that interview because he never really looked at me. He just sat there writing notes. In those first years of teaching, I would sit in on his class at least once a week during my spare. He was awesome to watch. He was tough on his senior classes, but inspired them, and me, to work harder. I was not aware of his illness until today. It is incredibly difficult when a personal mentor crosses over, especially when I never got the opportunity to express to him how inspirational he was to a young upstart like myself. I was waiting to do it at his retirement. Another lesson learned: never wait to express gratitude. I will be unable to attend the funeral as I will not be back in Canada until later that evening; another level of sadness that I will not be there to celebrate his life. Goodnight, sweet prince...

Mr. Steffler, you once when teaching, slammed the class door so hard, a ceiling tile fell and landed on a empty desk. There was silence, and then you said... write a response to what just happened. I'll never forget the unpredictable but memorable classes we had. You taught us to think for ourselves and not to just regurgitate, and so for that... Thank you and may you Rest in Peace.

It's hard to find the right words for someone who taught me how to appreciate them in the first place; all I can say is that Mr. Steffler was one of the most inspiring and influential teachers you could ever hope to have. He was such a genuinely kind, intelligent, and creative person, and he showed me how to see the value in everything and everyone. He made an impact on every single student he taught, and I know that those who have graduated from SDCI haven't forgotten what an amazing individual he was.
