Obituary of Vernon George Giberson
April 17th 2016, Vernon George Giberson passed away peacefully on a beautiful spring day in his 90th year at Strathroy General Hospital.
Vernon was born in Arthurette, NB and enlisted in the Armed Forces at 16 years of age. He was a decorated WWII veteran who landed on the shores of Juno beach during the Normandy invasion, and was part of the liberation of Holland.
Vernon retired to a farm just outside of Melbourne, Ontario in 1976 where he was an active community member. Proud of his service, he was a member & past-president of the Melbourne Legion, and shared his military service experience in Remembrance Day Celebrations over the past 17 years at Parkview Public School in Komoka, Ontario.
Vernon filled his spare time restoring buggies and carriages; built a motorized horseless carriage with his friend Al Brown, which brought hours of joy to his many grandchildren. Vernon never lost his New Brunswick roots, and he took his children and grandchildren back home for fishing trips. He was a woodworker who enjoyed spending time in his 5,000 sq.ft “Man Cave/ Shop” and as a Maritimer, Vernon was a ruthless card shark, spending many a night playing cards with family and friends, often well past everyone’s bedtime.
Vernon is pre-deceased by his first wife Marion Giberson, and is survived by his loving wife Lucy Landry Giberson. He is also survived by his children Ron Giberson (Judy), Ann McNall (John), Jane Hawkins (Jim), Jean Giberson (Bill), Don Giberson (Deb), Tom Giberson (Nicole), Rob Giberson (Maureen), Ken Giberson (Margaret- Ann), Mark Giberson (Karen), Dale Giberson (Michelle) and his step-children; Sherry Stephenson (Marvin), Wayne Landry, Andrea Keller, Wilber Marchena, Jean-Paul Landry (Annette), Nicole Landry. Vernon is also survived by many many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great, grandchildren, who adored him.
Visitors will be received at Denning’s of Strathroy on Thursday, April 21st, 2016 from 2-4p.m and 7-9p.m with a legion service at 6:30p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, April 22nd at All Saints Roman Catholic Church, Strathroy at 11a.m.
