Rick was a wonderful husband and life partner to Karen. He brought joy to her life and the lives of so many around him. He was always concerned about the well being of others even while he was going through tremendous pain and emotional stress caused by his illness. Through his actions and courage he taught many of those around him what was really important in life. He lived his life fully to the end even though his body was being ravaged. He continued to care, love and participate in the lives of those that cared and loved him. He will always be in our memories. Brent, Gina, Ben and Sophie

Rick was a wonderful friend to myself and George. We shared many wonderful adventures with Rick and Karen. He suffered so much and now he is at peace. His love for Karen was so evident .He would greet each morning with his infectious smile, and be thankful for another day with his loving wife. I am so proud of the man Rick became throughout his long, painful journey. My thoughts are with Karen and the family during this difficult time.

We are so sorry to hear that Rick passed away. My Dad (Bill Mailer) painted for Rick many years ago at Mel Hall. We recently ran into you at the cancer clinic. Whenever we saw you, Rick always had a cheerful disposition despite all that he was going through. He sure was a fighter and he was so fortunate to have you fighting along with him every step of the way, Karen. Our sincere sympathies to you all during this difficult time.

I have known Rick just for few years. When I first met him I was amazed that, despite the pain and suffering, he had a big smile on his face, all coming from his big heart and unbreakable spirit. I thought myself, what an incredible man. Ever since, he continued to amaze me every single time. He sailed through life by the power of his will and the love to his family. May he now enjoy the eternal peace and infinite beauty of a new form of existence.

"Rick" ailas / Woody
I have known Rick since about 1956.
We were the best of friend through boating, roller skating and racing our car from London to Grand Bend. I think he held the record from Richmond & Oxford to Grand Bend in 29 minutes. With his Mom's car. We always liked to race to GB or to London. Much less traffic in those days.
We also raced in the river and many a close call meeting other boats coming at us.
We all water skied in the Grand Bend River and turned around at Catfish Pond and skied back.
I was on the lake last weekend and thought how strange it was not to have Rick to race up and down the lake with. He was always a little faster but always kept me in the race from Port Franks to St Joes.
I remember one time after roller skating we all took our boats out and ran to Pt Franks. Never any lights on our little boats so it was no surprise when we misjudged the harbor at Pt Franks and ran a full boat length on shore and spend the rest of the night digging our way back into the water.
Rick's Chick and the Jane R can tell lots of late night story's when we kids were out in the lake. One night one of the boats with no lights of coarse got run over by a larger cruiser. Think that scare the boys as they hightailed it full speed up the river, tied up and went home. Only to deal with the police the next day.
Rick you will be so missed, I just hope you can race all you want in Heaven.
John Blonde, John Payne, Greg Hodgins, Rob McFarlane, Lesley Shields, Barb Jackson, Barb Nunn, Alanna Quinn & Jim Young were a few of the gang that all Skated and played in the river and on the lake together.
