Dear Kathy,
My thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family. Your mom always made us feel welcome at your home and cottage. She laughed (a lot) at our teenage antics. May she find peace with those that are waiting for her. May you find peace in the good memories.
Lots of love, Jenn (Smith) Armatage

Mary Katherine Carruthers Buchanan
November 1946 to December 2024
Mary Kay was born just a few short months after me and lived only a few farms away from us. We celebrated at birthday parties at each others farms, Halloween parties at the Melbourne town hall, went to school together with Mr Horn as our principal and Mrs. Beattie was our teacher for every grade. We called each other every Christmas morning as children to ask what we got from Santa. We continued that call later, as adults and seniors..not about the gifts, but to sincerely wish each other joy.
As children, we rode the horses, visited our respective Grandparents together and was babysat by our mutual cousin, Archie Carruthers. We spent time with another mutual cousin, Carol. Her Mom taught us how to make doll clothes.
When my family moved to Peterborough, Kay came for summer visits and our friendship continued. I do believe that we actually stressed our Mothers beyond their endurance at times with our creative adventures!! We lived our young years without fear…and did get into a lot of trouble. (But never serious!)
In our adult years, our lives had many twists and turns but we were there for each other through them all. After Mary Kay’s tragic accident, I spent the day of the funeral with her in intensive care and with Karen on the paediatric floor, at the Strathroy hospital. In the following days, Karen was transferred to Victoria hospital in London, where I was nursing and was able to take my breaks being with her.
In the following years, my two and her two daughters spent many times together…at the cottage, at country fairs, and the twins actually babysat for 4 days while I was at an out of town work commitment. Looking at the house when I got home, I can only assume that they all had fun.
One summer, when I was at Mary Kay’s old cottage with my girls, my Aunt Margaret Carruthers invited the four children for a tea party with her across the gully, then had Kay and I up for an women’s only tea. She lovingly warned us “single parents” of the bad men out there, and to be careful. Both Mary Kay and I held that memory close to our hearts that she loved us enough to have that rather intimate discussion with us. I won’t share with you the times that we didn’t adhere to her advice closely enough, but instinct or our guardian angels saved us.
Mary Kay and I went to so many social events together over the years, we went to church together and were travel companions several times to Florida with even more adventures!! Florida also became a delightful family reunion with her siblings.
I do believe she has spent the years since the loss of Duncan, Brenda and JD searching in vain to recreate that special marriage relationship. She is finally in his loving arms and holding onto them and Karen with immense joy.
Moving forward without Mary Kay being a part of my journey is unimaginable for me at this time but if anyone deserves an easy exit from this life here on earth, it would be my beloved cousin and friend.
May you finally find that joy and peace you have been so desperately seeking for so long, Mary Kay.

To Mary Kay's Family,
Please accept my Deepest Sympathy in your loss. I remember so well the evening a fellow nurse and myself went to emerg to pick up a patient to take to our Surgical Floor. It was a 29 year old woman who was charted as a widow. Both of us young women at the time thought how sad it would be to be widowed at 29, only to hear later that she had been in a car accident that took the lives of her husband Duncan, her daughter Brenda and her young son JD, as well as injuring her twin daughters as well. She was a very good patient who I don't remember ever complaining and I often wondered how she must feel being stuck in the hospital not being able to attend funerals for her husband, son or daughter. Well Mary Kay, you are finally together again! Hug them tight to make up for all the lost years.
Treasure you many memories of her and hold them close to your hearts where she will always remain and remember that LOVE never dies.
RIP.
Sincerely.
Linda Fox (Retired RNA SMGH)
