Obituary of Lynda Kathleen Paine

Surrounded by her family, on the night of September 21^st, 2024, Lynda Kathleen Paine, in her 77^th year, passed away.

Lynda arrived on February 25^th, 1948, in Strathroy, Ontario to Reginald Beverly Freer and Eva Eileen Such. Lynda was born early in dramatic fashion during a snowstorm, with her mother being carried on an old door from the farm on Napier Road to a waiting car on the 6^th Line to head to the hospital. Growing up on the farm Lynda was teased and tormented by her two older brothers. She loved playing with the barn cats which cemented the beginning of her crazy cat-loving life. She attended SS #1 Metcalfe school and later graduated from SDCI.

Before her final year of high school, Lynda met Glenn Paine, they began dating and continued while Lynda went through training in St Thomas to become a registered nurse. While at training, she met her lifelong best friend, Barb Howlett, who was there for her in all the important moments in life including being at her side during her final moments. 

After graduation in 1969, Lynda began nursing at SMGH and she and Glenn got married and moved into her old schoolhouse. It was during that time that Lynda began her special relationship with Glenn’s baby sister Marjorie who lived with them for a short time. 

The 70s and 80s were busy for Lynda raising 4 children and being a part of the nursing staff that opened the ICU at SMGH where she made several other lifelong friends.  As the kid’s schedules became more hectic, she opted for a Monday to Friday nursing position and retired in 2019 after a 50-year nursing career.

After losing Pop in 2020 and a couple quiet years at home, she and Chester Holod began a wonderful relationship and were engaged in the fall of 2022. Lynda and Chester loved travelling together visiting many places.  After Mom got sick Chester made it his mission to take her to Disney World which was the highlight of her final weeks.  

Lynda loved all her nieces and nephews however she wanted to acknowledge the special relationships with her nephew Reggie and her niece Jackie. She also spent a lot of time with the Brackenbury branch of the Darling Family in Royal Oak and Sturgis Michigan.  

Lynda was predeceased by her husband Glenn, her parents, Reg & Eileen, grandson Reginald Murray Lynch, her brother Bob Freer, her nephew Jimmy Freer, her sister-in-law, Wanda (the late Don Budden), her Aunt Audrey Freer (the late Floyd McCaw) and her Uncle Bill Freer (the late Adele).

Lynda is survived by her partner Chester Holod; her son Thomas (Laureen); her daughters Vicki (Ken Lynch); Lindsay (Josh Otermanns); Cassie-Jo (Tyler Pavey); brother Larry (Monica) Freer; sister-in-law Brenda (late Bob) Freer; sisters-in-law Louise (Richard Bolton);  Marjorie (Max Langford); loving Nana to her grandchildren Lucas and Marcus Paine; Cole and Charlotte Lynch; and also Julianna, James, and Ayleigh; her “Dutch Daughter” Sarah; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and other relatives.  Lynda also felt fortunate to have gained a wonderful bonus daughter in Sandy Wilcox (Brian Sanders) and her children, Tyler and Abby.

We would all like to thank the wonderful, kind and caring nursing staff at SMGH, the staff at the Cancer Clinic in Victoria Hospital and all her family and friends for the visits, well wishes, and phone calls to mom during her illness. 

As per her wishes, Lynda has been cremated and both she and her husband Glenn will be laid to rest at a private family inurnment ceremony on Saturday, September 28^th at Strathroy Cemetery. Visitation will be at Denning’s of Strathroy on Friday, September 27^th from 4:00pm to 8:00pm. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, September 28^th from 1:00pm to 4:00pm at the Kerwood Optimist Hall (formerly St Paul’s Parish Hall).
