Yolande “Yoli” Assabgui (nee Nehma), 92, passed away peacefully on October 27, 2023 at the St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital in St. Thomas, Ontario, after having lived with dementia for the last few years of her life.

Predeceased by her beloved husband Joseph, Yoli was the loving and devoted mother of Rami (Stanley Lunan, predeceased), Rafik, Robert (Elaine), and Rita (Peter Smoke).  Cherished grandmother of Wolfgang, Karl, Matthew, and Amy, and great-grandmother to Saul, Seth, and Malcolm. Dear sister of Roland Nehma (predeceased) and Roberte McKhool.

Yoli was born in Cairo, Egypt, and immigrated to Canada in 1968, settling in Ottawa, Ontario to raise her family. She became a proud Canadian citizen in 1973. Yoli loved classical music, opera, and along with her husband Joe enjoyed a yearly subscription to the ballet at the National Arts Centre. She often visited exhibitions at the National Gallery of Canada, and was a dedicated volunteer at the Canadian Museum of History (formerly the Canadian Museum of Civilization). An avid reader, Yoli could often be found at the Ottawa Public Library, reading Paris Match and Hello! magazines and everything she could find about the Royal Family.

The family is thankful that Yoli is reunited with Joe, whom she missed so dearly for the last 15 years of her life, and that her battle with dementia is over.  Respecting her wishes, there will be no visitation or services. For those who wish, please consider a donation in Yoli’s name to the charity of your choice.
