117 meatballs. That’s the message I would have shared with my brother, Gerrit today. We had a bit of a running joke which started when our Mom would count the number of meatballs she made to put into her fabulous meatball soup. So every time I made meatball soup, I’d text him with the number and usually a picture to go with it.
We will all miss Gerrit in the many ways he touched our lives. He definitely left his mark on the world and in our hearts. So hug those special to you and know you make a difference to someone. <3

We remember when you moved in across the street as a newly married couple.... the joy, the enthusiasm, the sparkle that you guys had starting your lifetime together. We remember Gerrit's solid determination at being the best he could be or do.... washing his vehicles with distilled water for a "no spot" shine, using the "top dress/over seed" method of filling in bare patches of lawn, squaring the lawn off to knife-edge perfection and replacing old patio furniture with new to keep the back pool deck looking spiffy. We remember police cars and immaculate uniforms.... Gerrit going to work, Gerrit coming home from work, someone from the town P.D. doing a short stop.
Your home is the first thing we see when we look out our front window and it has always symbolized a happy, orderly, safe anchor to the neighbourhood. We have been inspired by Gerrit's drive for the best.. We may not wash our cars as often as Gerrit did, but it was always a contest for the highest shine. We may have a few lumps on our lawn but Gerrit's "top dress/over seed" method gave us our backyard green lawn minus the knife-edge perfection that we find impossible. And we still have your old patio furniture that we purchased and use to this very day!
Having Gerrit in our midst all these years reminded us how necessary it is to follow the everyday rules in life and live to reap the benefits. Thanks for being our Neighbour, Gerrit. You were the pillar we all looked up to.

Gerrit was always a mentor and friend, during our career together at Strathroy Caradoc Police and while we both enjoyed retirement. I only wish we had more time to spend together.
