Obituary of August Van Loy
It is with heavy hearts that the family of August Van Loy announces his passing on January 18th, 2022 at Sprucedale Care Centre, Strathroy, at the age of 98. Gus was the dear husband of the late Sidonia Van Loy (1984) for 36 years and Mary DeGroot for 32 years. He leaves behind daughters Wendy (Cor) Strik, Erna (John) Jansen and Annette (John) VanDinther. Grandpa to Danielle Strik, Aaron (Anna) Strik, Kevin Jansen, Ellen (Mike) Minten. Rick Jansen, David (Pasquale) VanDinther and Denny (Ricki) Van Dinther. Stepfather to Simon (Joanne) DeGroot, Mary Ann DeGroot and Kathy (Ralph) Baker. Step grandfather to Kristine, Michelle, John, Shannon, Nina, Wes, Sydney and Sam. Great grandfather to 16 grandchildren. He is survived by siblings Alphons, Jozef, Marcel and Emiel and predeceased by Adolph and Maria all of Belgium.
In the 1950’s Gus and Sidonia immigrated from Belgium to Canada. In the years that followed, they were joined by the Wouters, Vanden Eynde, Verelst, Verreth, Soetemans, and DeBorger families - all relatives of Sidonia. They became a tight-knit community. Gus was the last surviving member of that original generation in Canada. Gus farmed in the Forest area until his retirement. After Gus retired, he moved to Strathroy with Mary where he became an avid gardener, golfer and bowler.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to the caregivers of Sprucedale Care Centre for taking excellent care of Gus.
