I was just so saddened to hear about Jan’s passing. My condolences to his family and friends. My own father passed away in June of last year, and Jan was just so helpful to me during that time. He took my telephone calls and came up to the condo unit to brainstorm practical solutions to problems and to help implement those solutions. I live in Australia but am so grateful I had several months in Canada and that my path crossed with Jan’s – a gentle, loving and talented man. Blessings from afar, Wanda

Dear Gerda and Family,
Our hearts are very saddened and we mourn with you in the sudden loss of your husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. John was one of the first people we met at the Mission Thrift Store . He was a tireless worker with a ready smile and friendly banter, and we miss him. We pray that you will experience God's presence in the difficult days ahead.

Gerda and Family,
Jan has gone, and we are missing him. His death saddened us, but his life was an example that soothes our pain. In life, he spread love and goodness, so we are sure that he is in peace of God's arms. In heaven, he is asking God to give us strength and courage to overcome this difficult moment. We will keep in our hearts the memory of him alive with all goodness, joy, and love, and thus we will feel his presence among us forever. Love you guys. Carlos and Fany

Dear Gerda and family,
What a shock to hear of the passing away of your dear husband and partner, so sudden. Immediately the many Sunday lunch times come to mind, first high up and then in the present place on the ground floor. In a time like this there is no other comfort but holding on or rather standing on the Lord Jesus the solid Rock, for all other ground is sinking sand. May our Rock carry you and yours through these grieving days, but also through the coming lonely days. You will not see us these days. Mrs. van Essen is no longer able to attend such functions, and I have minor surgery this Wednesday. Besides that I do not drive any more. But our thoughts and prayers are with you. Love from both of us. Pastor van Essen.

Dear Mrs Dekker and family, our heartfelt condolences on the loss of your husband, father, Opa.
We all have fond memories of visiting yours between church years ago and more latterly of your long lasting and much loved friendship with Mom and Dad. Mr Dekker introduced Dad to volunteering with him at BFM, he was a valued and dear friend to Dad, and he thoroughly enjoyed working with him there. Your pans of soup, visits and looking out for them and all of us during tough times is never forgotten.
You are in our thoughts and prayers, and we wish you strength for the times ahead.
Much love to you all, the Verboom family (Joan and Scott, Arlene and Joe, John and Sharon, William and Joanna)

It was a pleasure to work alongside John in the past few years at Mission Thrift Store. He was always on the lookout for something that would be helpful to someone in his life-from walkers and wheelchairs to scrap wood for his hobbies. He invested in the lives of people who others would consider to be on the margins, and he did so with grace, dignity, and good humour. I enjoyed brushing up on my Dutch when he was around.
May the Lord be near to you as you remember him, and may you find peace in knowing that he is being ushered into heaven as a beloved and faithful servant of the Most High.

One of my favorite memories of Jan took place at their cottage "up north" in Port Loring many years ago. I was a widow, and was making the 12 hour drive from the Grand Rapids area with Luke and Alise, who were not old enough to drive. (I am privileged to share 4 wonderful grandchildren with Jan and Gerda.) I had not had experience driving on the hilly, bumpy dirt road to the cottage, and I was worried that I would wreck something on the underside of the rental car that I was driving. When we got to the turnoff to go to the cottage, there were Jan and Gerda sitting in their car waiting for us. Jan offered to drive the rental car over the rough road to the cottage, and Gerda drove their car back. I don't know how long they had been sitting there waiting for us to arrive, but I was so relieved, I could have cried, and may have shed a tear or two. What a kind heart he had!
