Obituary of Donald Robert MacMillan

MacMillan, Donald Robert

It is with heavy hearts the family of Robert (Bob) MacMillan announces his passing on July 18, 2021 at Parkwood Hospital at the age of 86. Loving father to Tim MacMillan and Julie (Joe) de Laronde. Proud grandpa to Alexis de Laronde, Teagan de Laronde, Nicole MacMillan and Cameron MacMillan. Bob will be missed by his special friend, Judy Spurgeon.

Born in Windsor, Ontario Bob later moved to London, Ontario where he had a long career as a high school teacher with the Thames Valley District School Board. He was a dedicated hard worker, starting his own pool construction and roofing company; Maco Pools and Patios, during his months off from teaching. In his early years, he enjoyed playing sports such as hockey and football, and as a parent, coached various hockey teams for over 10 years. Bob had many interests that kept him busy and generally took pleasure in the simple things in life while enjoying nature, the outdoors and the fun times his home in Bayfield, Ontario brought him.

He enjoyed camping and canoeing with friends, in Algonquin Park, Northern Ontario and Maine and was the encouragement for Julie, Tim and the extended family to actively camp and canoe to this day.

After retirement Bob still enjoyed the outdoors, gardening, especially corn and tomatoes, and woodworking.  He always had a carpentry project or two on the go to keep him busy. Family was very important to Bob and he was always seeking and encouraging family connections, particularly at the social house of Sloggett Hall. He loved to socialize over a beer, chat over a Timmies or ice cream, lend a helping hand if he could, and was the best supervisor - problem solver around.

Bob will be remembered for his obsession to over-decorate for the holidays, his love of baking a chocolate cake with too much icing, his singing and dancing to the oldies, maple syrup, eating peanut butter no matter the time of day, and endless fun times laughing while playing cards.

Bob was a kind soul, with a grateful heart and a strong loving spirit. Bob left us as he lived - thinking of family. He instilled in his kids a joy in the simple pleasures of life, the ability to laugh and enjoy the moment, and the value of caring for others. Thank you.

Bob will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Bob's life will be held on August 4th, 2021 at DENNING’S OF STRATHROY from 3:00-6:00pm. As an expression of sympathy, donations to The Friends Of Algonquin Park may be made online. Condolences may be made at www.strathroyfuneralhome.com.
