In his 95th year with his daughter and son by his side, Harry Slegers rode his bicycle to the heavens on August 27, 2020 from Strathroy Middlesex General Hospital. Predeceased by his wife Johanna Haazen (Anne) (2016) to whom he was married for 62 years. Dearly loved by his children Anne Marie (Michael), Cathy (Michael), Gary, Tony (Kathleen), Dan (Pat) and John (Cindy). Opa will also be missed by his 23 surviving grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren as well as his sister Nellie Willems of Delaware, ON and her family. Also survived by his youngest brother, Theo, as well as many nieces and nephews in The Netherlands. Predeceased by his son Tony (2012), his grandchildren Angela Martin (2004), Henry and Donald Shea (1976). Dad was born in Someren, Noord Brabant, The Netherlands and served in the Dutch East Indies (Indonesia) from 1947 to 1950. He and Mom emigrated to Canada in 1954. Dad worked on farms and in construction until he was able to buy his first farm near Delaware, ON. In 1962, he purchased a larger farm north of Watford where he raised pigs and cash cropped until he and Mom retired to Strathroy in 1983. They loved their northern cottage where Dad spent countless hours fishing, his favourite pastime. He also enjoyed gardening, biking, playing cards, and volunteering at All Saints Church in Strathroy. Many thanks to the staff at Brookside Retirement Living, Sprucedale Care Centre, and Strathroy Hospital for taking such good care of Dad for the past five years. As expressions of sympathy, donations may be made to Middlesex Right to Life, Strathroy Middlesex General Hospital, or Sprucedale Family Council. A Private Mass of Christian Burial will be held at All Saints Roman Catholic Church, Strathroy. Cremation to follow. Arrangements entrusted to Denning’s of Strathroy.
