Obituary of Keimpe Veldhuis
Dr. Keimpe (‘Ken’) Veldhuis (June 23, 1941 - Feb 10, 2020)
Keimpe Veldhuis, MD FRCP (C), died at home in his 79th year. Beloved husband of Diane (née Pincombe). Loving father of Jill-Anne, Caroline, Emily Nicole (pre-deceased, 1974), Liza, and her husband Carsten. Beloved ‘Pake’ of grandchildren Charlotte and Nicolas. Survived by siblings Atze (Oriole), Gé, Klaske Hallam (Raymond), Douwe, Joanne Glenn (Jack) and sister-in-law Carol Holt.
Keimpe was born in the village of Ternaard, Friesland (Netherlands) on the North Sea and his family immigrated to Canada in 1951. Ken grew up in Quyon, Fort Coulonge and Mallorytown before attending Brockville High School and Queen's University (Class of ’65), pursuing an internal medicine specialty with additional training in cardiology. His medical career began with work at United Church Missions in Haida Gwaii, supervising the outpatient clinic of internal medicine at Victoria Hospital (South Street), and private practice. He was a medical consultant at the London Regional Cancer Clinic, and St. Joseph’s Hospital (dept of psychiatry), and an assistant and associate professor teaching undergraduates and internal medicine residents at UWO’s School of Medicine. Keimpe’s love for horses led to his involvement with the London Pony Club, Special Ability Riding Institute, and the London Hunt. He was a member of the Historical Society of Lobo Township/Middlesex Centre Historical Society and he contributed to the establishment and operation of the Middlesex Centre Archives. Ken leaves a long legacy of patient-focused medicine and a strong commitment to nature and conservation. Over his lifetime he cared for and healed many and will be remembered for making this world a more humane and caring place.
