Obituary of Joseph Peter Podgornik
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Joseph Peter Podgornik on January 17, 2026, in Aylmer, Ontario. Born on August 23, 1936, in Črniče, Slovenia, Joseph lived a life marked by resilience, love, and generosity.
Joseph leaves behind his beloved wife Mauricette.
Father of Carmen McMath (2019) and Christopher Podgornik (Jennifer Mercer).
Papa of Jessica McMath, Alyssa McMath, Julia Podgornik and Olivia Podgornik.
Brother of Maria Podgornik, Theresa Debeljak & Olga Zigon.
Joseph will also be missed by many nieces, nephews and extended family and friends from across Canada, Europe and Australia.
Joseph was the tenth of fifteen children and grew up in a large, close-knit family. In 1956, he bravely escaped Yugoslavia, spending two years in Italy before making Canada his home in 1958. He spoke five languages and carried with him a deep appreciation for culture, history, and lively conversation.
In November 1963, Joseph married the love of his life, Mauricette (née Bruyneel), and together they built a beautiful family. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, cherishing every moment with his children.
A skilled cabinet maker by trade, Joseph managed large commercial construction projects as an acoustics specialist. His craftsmanship and dedication were evident in everything he touched. Even after retiring as a general carpenter, he continued to share his knowledge by teaching apprentices in the trade. Known for his ability to fix and build anything, Joseph was always eager to learn and work hard.
Beyond his talents, Joseph will be remembered for his kind heart and compassionate spirit. He was generous with his time, skills, and resources, always ready to help anyone in need. He enjoyed good food, playing bocce, and engaging in spirited discussions about history and politics.
Family and friends are invited to join the family for a Memorial Gathering on Monday, January 26, 2026, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Denning’s of Strathroy. A private burial will be held in the spring.
