Obituary of Mary Margit Summerfield
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mary Margit Summerfield (née Racz), age 89, who passed away peacefully at Sprucedale Care Centre in Strathroy on Monday, December 15, 2025. Mary was a devoted mother to Frank Kovacs, Zoltan Kovacs (Margaret Kovacs), and Leslie Kovacs. She was a loving grandmother to Stephan Kovacs-O’Neil (Alicia O’Neil), Michelle Kovacs-O’Neil (Devin Geroux), Harley Kovacs, and Shauna Sitter, and a cherished great-grandmother to Shyla Mason-O’Neil, Weston O’Neil and Jakob Kovacs. She was a caring sister to Steven, Peter, Jim, Anton, Mike Jr., and Esther, and will also be fondly remembered by her many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends. Mary was predeceased by her parents, Margaret and Mihály Racz. Born in Debrecen, Hungary, Mary immigrated to Canada in 1956 and proudly became a Canadian citizen in 1962. She later helped bring more of her family to Canada, including her parents. Mary went on to raise her three beloved sons, whom she loved dearly. Throughout her life, Mary wore many hats. She was a businesswoman, teacher, cook, homemaker, and owner of her own restaurant, Mary’s Place. She also generously volunteered her time with VON Home and Community Care and The Salvation Army Thrift Store. Mary had a deep love for gardening and took great pride in preserving food, always prepared to feed anyone who might be hungry. She enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and watching game shows when she wasn’t outdoors or volunteering. She had a wonderful sense of fashion and found joy in sewing, knitting, and creating things by hand. Later in life, Mary became a collector of useful treasures, especially through her volunteer work at Salvation Army thrift stores. Above all, Mary deeply loved her friends and family and made sure they always knew how special and important they were to her. Friends and family are welcome to a Memorial Service on Friday, January 23, 2026, with formal words begining at 1:30 pm, at Denning's of Strathroy, followed by a reception. In memory of Mary, donations may be made to Epilepsy Canada.
