Ronald Wannamaker

Obituary of Ronald Charles Wannamaker

Ronald Wannamaker died suddenly but peacefully at home on Thursday, October 16th, 2025, at the age of 89, having just given thanks to God for the dinner lovingly prepared by his wife, Joan.

Born on his family farm near Trenton, Ontario, on July 1st, 1936, Ron was proud to share his birthday with his “home and native land.” Growing up in rural Ontario during the 1930s and ’40s, Ron’s childhood resembled that of his pioneer ancestors—many of whom came from the United States as United Empire Loyalists during the American Revolution. As the only son among four doting sisters, Ron absorbed the simple rural values of honesty, hard work, responsibility, and a deep love for the beauty of eastern Ontario.

Ron’s first job was at the Canadian Forces Base in Trenton. Seeking better opportunities, he trained as an electrician and was later employed by Central Bridge. When technical studies were introduced into Ontario’s secondary school curriculum, Ron transitioned into teaching. His first and only teaching position brought his young family to Strathroy, where he taught every trade offered at the school from 1969 until his retirement in 1993. A proud moment for Ron and his family was his graduation from Western University in 1985—the same year as his wife and daughter—after years of night school.

A natural handyman, Ron loved to tinker, build toys for his children, and create a wide variety of woodworking projects. He was also a gifted athlete, excelling in baseball and hockey, which he played well into adulthood. His love for hockey was unmistakable, as he was a lifelong, die-hard Toronto Maple Leaf’s fan. Music was another lifelong passion. Taught to fiddle by his father, Ron often performed at local events, including one memorable performance at a one-room schoolhouse that sparked a romance with the schoolteacher, Joan Robinson—his beloved wife of nearly 66 years. Ron also taught himself guitar and banjo, even building his own guitar. His children, Paul, Jeannette, and Jeffrey, grew up surrounded by live music at family gatherings.

Ron was predeceased by his parents, Clifford and Ethel Wannamaker, and his sisters Marion, Doris, and Bernice. He is survived by his sister Joyce (Allan), his wife Joan, his children Paul (Ruth), Jeannette, and Jeffrey (Jane), and his cherished grandchildren Kaitlin, Cole, and Meriel. He is fondly remembered by many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and former students.

A visitation will take place on Saturday, November 8th, 2025, from 1pm until the time of Service at 2pm, officiated by Reverend Joshua Lawrence, at Denning’s of Strathroy, with a luncheon catered by Denning’s to follow.
